And I say that as a Vet who regularly uses the system. In fact, I am grateful for the care. But man, there are better ways to provide care. Old Soviet-style goofiness is NOT at all efficient or convenient.
Look, building VA hospitals is NOT cheap. Let’s say you divide up the actual cost (including facilities) of each veteran in terms of the medical care they use. Then you take the amount you would pay for that same care out in the community.
My bet is that it is far cheaper to just divide the costs by number of Veterans and then give them a “credit card” that they can use for care.
I mean, I have to drive a half hour to get to the VA. And it is in an adjoining town! I would certainly rather go to a Doc near me.
