I expect it from Leftists–it is a necessary part of Leftism itself. It is often part of their overt campaign in more Left-leaning places (in other places the candidate just lies). The crux of it is: “The masses are ignorant and don’t know crap, so I will make them do what is good for them. And surely I will do it, therefore give me the glory! …All will love me and despair!“
But many Republicans, no matter how “solid” you want to believe they are, eventually fall prey to this Ring of Power. The honest truth is that there are not many elected officials who are immune to this Lefty siren song. There are not many in the mold of Tom Bombadil. George Washingtons are just not thick on the ground…
