academia is a cesspool of racism and wokeism.
If I read this right, Judge Scorsi has thrown down the gauntlet to UCLA, essentially telling them that if they don’t prevent selective discrimination against Jews, they will effectively have to shut down the campus to everyone. This provides extraordinary leverage to the protestors, but that’s a good idea. In other words, crack down on the anti-Semites, or else look like the buffoons we all know you administrators to be. The next step will be hefty damages against the University of California.
It really makes me count my blessings that I didn’t go into academia! I was an adjunct professor at several universities, and always thought I would go that direction. But other opportunities arose, and I figured I would get back to academia. I never did. And then MS became an issue…
In the last class I taught, I caught the first “whiff” of wokeism with a student whining that a text for the class was too challenging to her Lefty worldview.
It was obnoxious, but I figured it was a one-off. But no, it was a harbinger of things to come. The bottom line is that I would have done very poorly from a personal perspective as an academic. Life would have been a living Hell.
And knowing myself, I am far too bull-headed to have backed down. So eventually I would have had to choose either my job or my principles. And thus, I would have been out kicking road apples. I certainly would never have gotten tenure…
So for a couple reasons, I very much dodged a bullet in not going into academia. It was one of the few benefits of getting MS.
