“Deepfakes” means that we will have to make major changes in what we accept as evidence. And that is particularly true in legal settings, though it is also huge in the political realm.
And here is another scenario: A politician does or says something really stupid. It is caught on video. But then, the politician claims it was only a “Deepfake” and just a sophisticated attack by his enemies. OK, what now?
I think we are rapidly coming to the time when the only way to discern truth from falsity is to have a relationship with the person speaking–you know them and you know that they are honest. That is yet another reason to have virtually all governance at a very local level.
I think that “Deepfakes” pretty much destroy a centralized government. The only guarantee of truth is a personal relationship with the person. Anything else can and will be faked.
As for the Rubio impersonations, the State Department told the Post that it would “carry out a thorough investigation and continue to implement safeguards to prevent this from happening in the future.” Let’s hope so. This could easily become a national security crisis if it’s not handled swiftly.
Maybe now you can only trust “official” missives. But the fact that the missives are official does not in any way mean that they are actually true. In fact, there is a long history of “official” lies, the most recent of which is the tech low-tech scam of Biden’s auto pen.
So that leaves us in a bit of a quandary. I mean, how do you know what is actually true?
