Basically, Hunter doesn’t want to be the “fall guy” for his dad. So he wants a different legal team–one that is beholden to him, not primarily to his dad… Joe just doesn’t want any publicity on this–he really just wants one of those yummy pudding cups and then maybe an ice-cream cone.
Obviously, Joe’s external brain hired hands want Hunter to stay within easy distance of the bus, just in case they need to shove him under it to save pudding-head Joe (and far more importantly, themselves)…
But Hunter does not seem to be entirely cooperating right now. Mostly, yes. But Hunter wants it to be HIS legal team. And THERE is the rub…
