Except that doesn’t quite work because the “target” is, in fact, innocent. AND, this is motivated entirely by self-interest. But the irrational, monomaniacal pursuit certainly fits!
At least Javert was pursuing a moral ideal rather than mere pompous self-justification and preening self-admiration combined with self-dealing. It’s actually more like Grima Wormtongue.
