seeing some pretty significant movement in Europe.
The results are coming in for today’s elections for the European Parliament, and so far it appears right-leaning populist parties are routing the establishment centrist and left parties. Green Parties are taking a disproportionate share of the losses.
Macron has called “snap” elections in an effort to survive.
In France, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally won with 32% of the vote — in line with expectations — while Macron’s Renaissance party trailed with 15%, according to a poll published by Ifop. In Germany, Scholz’s Social Democrats crashed to their worst-ever result, falling behind both the opposition conservatives and far-right Alternative for Germany.
Italy too:
“Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy topped polls in another sign of growing far-right influence in the EU, potentially allowing her to have a say over [Ursula] von der Leyen’s future. . . Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy’s party was on course to be the winner, according to a poll by Swg, published by La7, with the party expected to gain 27% to 31% compared to just over 6% in 2019.”
Now, for us Americans, the big question:
Is this an omen for our election in November, just as the Brexit vote in 2016 foreshadowed the outcome?
